Have you already made your New Year’s resolution for 2017? It’s not too late if you haven’t. Corpus Christi dentist Dr. Sarah Pitarra and her staff have an idea for you—resolve to make 2017 the year to you have your healthiest smile! There are several simple things you can do to accomplish your goal. And best of all, we’ll be here to help you! Read on to learn more about the dental health resolutions that Dr. Pitarra recommends.
Brush and Floss Like You Mean It!
We trust that you brush your teeth twice daily and floss at least once a day. But are you doing each task correctly? Making small changes in your daily oral hygiene routine can make a big difference in the effectiveness of your efforts. First, always use a soft toothbrush and change out your brush every three to four months or when the bristles begin to look worn—whichever comes first. And because we’re in the midst of flu season, be sure to use a new toothbrush after illness, too.
Place a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste on your brush. Then, set the brush at a 45-dgree angle against your teeth and gums. You need to brush the surfaces of your teeth and along the gum line; holding your brush at this angle helps. Brush for a solid two minutes and then floss between your teeth. Finish up with a refreshing oral rinse.
Choose Your Foods and Beverages Wisely
No doubt you know what foods and beverages are bad for your teeth and overall oral health; tasty treats filled with sugar increase the acidity in your mouth, which can lead to cavities. But do you know what is good for your teeth? Fill your diet with fresh fruits and vegetables that scrub your teeth and stimulate saliva flow. Eat cheeses and yogurt and drink milk to ensure your diet has an adequate amount of calcium, which helps to build strong teeth and bones. And when you can’t brush after a meal, chew gum with Xylitol to neutralize acids.
