When you have a TMJ disorder, it’s essential to find the right kind of treatment that can help you achieve relief from your chronic jaw pain. But exactly how long will that take? This seemingly simple question does not have a set-in-stone answer; after all, each patient is different, and there’s more than one kind of TMJ treatment that might be recommended. Below is a brief look at TMJ disorder, how it can be addressed, and what the timeline for treatment might look like.

What Does It Mean When You Have a TMJ Disorder?

Having TMJ disorder means that something is wrong with the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) that allow you to move your jaw. The condition is often a result of the joints becoming injured or overworked. People with TMJ disorder often suffer from chronic jaw pain, and they might also have trouble opening or closing their jaws. Other potential symptoms include earaches, difficulty chewing, pain in the neck or shoulders, headaches, and migraines.

What Does the Timeline for TMJ Treatment Look Like?

Some cases of TMJ disorder are more severe than others, and there’s more than one possible cause. As such, the kind of TMJ treatment recommended in your case can vary, as can the amount of time it takes for you to find lasting relief. Here’s an overview of some of your options for TMJ treatment and the timelines associated with them:

  • Occlusal Splints: An occlusal splint is a type of oral appliance that repositions the jaw to allow the TMJs to rest and recover. Additionally, a splint can protect your teeth and jaw from the worst of bruxism (unconscious teeth clenching and grinding), which commonly contributes to TMJ disorder. The amount of time that you need to wear an occlusal splint in order to achieve lasting relief can range from a few weeks to several months.
  • Bite Adjustment: Some of your teeth may not fit together properly, which can cause problems with your jaw joints. A bite adjustment involves making small changes to specific teeth to improve your bite and ensure the TMJs aren’t exposed to too much pressure. After the procedure, you’re likely to see an improvement in your symptoms in a matter of weeks, but it will likely be about three to six months before you experience complete relief.
  • At-Home Treatments: Stretching or massaging your jaw can often go a long way toward relieving your TMJ disorder. This approach is relatively simple, but it can take weeks or months to achieve the results you want.

If you’re tired of dealing with chronic jaw pain due to a TMJ disorder, you should contact your dentist right away. The sooner you start your TMJ treatment, the sooner you can overcome your discomfort.
